Aunt Joan Was a Shenache

Murphy Stuff To Share (MSTS)
- Dan

Now that I'm retired, I can stop and smell the memories. Here's one from (Shenache) Reenie on Aunt Joan.

πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

Shenache – keeper of the family tales
Clairvoyant/ Magical: read palms, tea leaves
Themes: God, family, Irish, Alanon, faith, the sea, California, fiercely loyal
The greatest generation that ever lived: depression baby and the wars
Courage and faith in all life’s experiences: Alanon, cancer, heart attack,
Born on Veteran’s Day.

Our Aunt Joan was a shenache, which is a word for an Irish storyteller. Though she never got the chance to travel to Ireland and kiss the Blarney Stone, she was indeed given the gift of weaving wonderful stories.

For us, she was the keeper of the family tales. Her eyes would twinkle as she would tell us stories about our Murphy and Kelly ancestors… some of whom we never knew…but were in the old photographs…. like the 7 Kelly sisters, and Black Jack Kelly. She brought her grandparents alive for us in her stories… Grandma Kelly was a woman’s rights activist long before it was fashionable… as Joan would describe her… she was tall, erect, smart, industrious, daring,  always dressed impeccably and modeled and thus expected good manners.  She took Spanish lessons, flying lessons, and even owned some valuable property in downtown Los Angeles. Joan always seemed a little in awe of her… who wouldn’t be? Then she would tell us about Grandma Murphy. She seemed a little eccentric…Joan often described her as short and wearing a funny little black coat and hat. She told us that Grandma would invite her to the movies, and they would ride the streetcar to the theater, when Joanie was about 12. Joan was a little embarrassed to be seen with her… and she was sorry to say that she even ditched her once by sitting in a different spot. When they met up after the movie, Grandma never mentioned it or ratted her out. Another story about Grandma Murphy involved my Dad. Dad was about 16 and tried his hand at making beer. Dad excitedly offered her a glass, and apparently it was really awful, but Grandma  never wanted to  burst my Dad’s bubble, so she was a good sport and drank it, saying something like “now that wasn’t too bad Jimmy for your first try.” Joan always admired her for her loyalty.

Joan told us how Grandpa Jim worked at Hennessey’s in Butte Montana in the haberdashery dept., and how when Grandpa Jim came by to call on Aggie, and invite her to go ice-skating, her Dad declared that was the man she was going to marry.

Her tales about family members were often filled with romance, tragedy and sometimes un-requited love. Like Aunt Imelda …..

Joan was fiercely loyal in her devotion to family. Sometimes, her stories may have been colored with that bias, but that made it all the more endearing. She always reminded us how lucky we were to be in such a loving family.

Joan was born on Veteran’s Day. She told us that when she was a little girl, Grandma Aggie would take her out in Los Angeles for her birthday and  tell her that the parades and flags were in her honor… she knew that she was special!  When Nancy and I went to visit her on her birthday in the convalescent hospital this past Veteran’s Day, Susan had decorated the room with banners and flags, and we reminded her that all the flags were up everywhere for her special day. I know she heard us, and she was pleased.

Our Aunt Joan was magical. She was born with special gifts of intuition, clairvoyance, and that 6th sense. She could read tea leaves, and after dinner, we often would finish up with a cup of tea and perform the ritual of turning the cup over in the saucer, and rotating the cup just so, for the “proper reading”. At family parties, it would not be unusual for the cousins to sit around waiting for their turn at having their palm read. Sometimes Joan would tell us that she had just that day spoken with relatives that had passed away. It was never scary, but rather comforting that they were always there with us. Who can ever forget the stories of our stay in the Bryant’s house in Cedar Rapids?  Joan had many “close encounters” in that place!

Joan was one of the most faith-filled women I will ever know. Her trust and faith in God was such an inspiration… deep, personal, and it sustained her throughout all her life. She would always tell us that we were in her prayers and I always knew that it was true… I felt it many times!  She always “God-blessed us” with a cross on the forehead as we were saying goodbye at the end of each visit.

Joan loved Alanon where she was able to put her faith into service and action. She often spoke at meetings and was a sponsor for many women throughout Orange County. Her Alanon background gave her a wisdom and empathy for family members, but strangers as well. She applied the 12 steps and principles to not only alcoholism, but to her everyday life. Her faith enabled helped her to survive breast cancer and a heart attack. Joan will always be a role model and I am proud to have witnessed her speaking at Alanon meetings. She always had them in the “palm of her hand”.

Joan was a member of “the greatest generation that ever lived”, as Tom Brokaw termed that era. She was a depression baby, so she knew the value of hard work and selflessness. She saw Wayne through the War and then settled to live the American Dream in Anaheim California. When they got the backyard pool, we had many happy family times there. Joan loved having us all over to enjoy the pool, and that even continued into the next generation. Our children have fond memories of going to Joan and Wayne’s to swim. Joan would often quote Grandpa Jim, “I don’t know what I did to deserve to live in California”. She loved to go to the beach, and take long walks; she was always renewed by the scent of the fresh salt air and the sound of the waves. It seemed to renew her spirits.

Joan has always been a part of my life. We have pictures of Dan and me in our backyard in Anaheim holding our suitcases for an overnight stay at Joan and Wayne’s. Joan got Dan and I started in coin collecting, buying us our first collections books. When we moved to La Mesa, Joan and Wayne would often travel down for a weekend visit, holidays, birthdays, join us in San Clemente vacations, and of course, when the Bryants came, it was always family time.

When Nancy and I started teaching and lived on Balboa Island, Joan and Wayne would often have us over for a home-cooked meal, and Wayne would change the oil in our cars. They took such good care of us! We had fun having them over for the Christmas boat parades, and summer dinners at our apartment. They were always there for us… even meeting the boyfriends (future husbands). They continued their love and support with our own kids… they came to birthdays parties, baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, Graduations… celebrating joyously all of life’s milestones with us.

Family First

We just received a message from Monita:

There are now two more to be added to the February birthdays. Yesterday (February 8) Katie (Mark’s second daughter) and her husband, Jake Schroll welcomed Levi David  and Harper Marie. They were due in the middle of April but they admitted Katie to the hospital with high blood pressure with the hope of giving the babies steroids to strengthen their lungs but Katie developed pre-eclapsia which started to affect her kidneys so they performed a caesarean. Levi weighed 3 lbs. 11 oz. and Harper weighed 3 lbs. 8 oz. Not bad for being over two months early. I wonder what they would have weighed if they’d gone full term. Everyone is healthy and doing well.

Congratulations to ALL! πŸ’Ÿ

BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE:

Patrick Murphy turns back Moscow

We can't promise that we will post as diligently as we did in 2020, but Dan put this up today. Thanks Luke and Dan! Feisty Irishmen!

It reminded me of a great movie recommendation: Fisherman's Friends. It is great fun... all about fishermen who lived in Cornwall England and sang "Sea Shanties" and were discovered and became famous! (60's - 70's) My friend, Sandy is from Cornwall, and her niece was married on the beach in Port Isaac (where this was filmed) a few years back,  and had the Fisherman sing Sea Shanties on the beach at her wedding! True story!

Calling all February birthdays: πŸŽ‚Please email me the family birthdays in February, so that we can post them... will try to do this each month going forward! I will post them tomorrow! maureenrenden@gmail.com. LYM Reenie

Thanks for the prayers

50 years

January 27, 2022

Hard to believe that Dad has been gone 50 years... a solemn anniversary, for sure.
I love this photo; one of my favorites of Dad swinging the golf club in the front yard of the La Mesa house!
I picture him golfing in many gorgeous courses throughout the world...Ireland, Scotland, Augusta Georgia, Maui Hawaii, in Pebble Beach and of course... Torrey Pines! His choice!
Rest in peace Dad... till we meet again! Gotcha Last and Love You More!πŸ’“

Dan emailed me this morning with this message:
"While cleaning up my browser website bookmarks, I noticed that the last post to the family blog was Reenie's request for prayers for Jan. I decided to tie off that thread with a post today. Feel free to share. The blog is open for business again! :-) Lots going on."

Well... I am so rusty... I had to re-educate myself as to how to post!

Thanks, Dan for this  beautiful post!

I am taking a biospiritual workshop and the reminder was that we are made for relationships!
Though this is such a dark and challenging time... it is important to stay connected!

We offer our deepest condolences to not only Dan, but also to Lynn Weddington Welly, as her husband,  Michael passed away earlier this month.

Dan sent me a video that his parish made as a tribute for the families of parishoners who passed this past year.
It was set to the most beautiful song: Saints and Beloved of God

With rusty loves... I love you all more!

3/12/21 from Luke: "My Great Grandfather was in the Butte newspaper yesterday!"

Wait, what?!?

Yep.

On Friday, the Montana Standard ran an article about the influence on Butte of the descendants of the Beara Peninsula, location of Ardgroom, Eyeries, County Cork and other family origins. Here’s what they said about Grandpa Jim:

James J. Murphy was just 45 years old when he died in [1938], but he accomplished much in his relatively short life.

Murphy worked his way up to management positions at Hennessy’s and for a time, ran the Centerville branch. If he wasn’t working, he was fully committed to the numerous Irish organizations, including the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

The one-time AOH president was not afraid to voice his opinion either. In a March 15, 1915 letter to Mayor C.A. Smith, who questioned the patriotism of Butte’s Irish organization, Murphy did not mince words.

Here are Grandpa Jim's own words:

I wish to state that you have been misinformed as to the purpose of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. It is not intended as a Teutonic demonstration against the Allies or anyone else. Your appeal to the men taking part in the parade to refrain from disorderly or offensive conduct is altogether unnecessary. Your instructions prohibiting the carrying of firearms in this parade comes as a surprise, from the fact that we carried arms last year and on numerous other occasions without known opposition from any quarter. Therefore, your action at this time seems to me to be influenced by a few underground bigots.

Some in our family are known for being outspoken. C'mon on, Jim, tells us what you really think.

The history behind his references to “Teutonic demonstration,” “carrying of firearms,” “underground bigots,” and our GGGFather's leadership fills me with family pride ... but that’s a story for another day.

I like the YouTube version here. Jim’s picture – thank you Luke! – is at minute 2:47.

The full Standard article is here.

Five to Nine

https://www.instagram.com/mollyzivetherapy/
3/8/21

Molly Zive, granddaughter of Marty and Monita, got a shoutout Monday from The Financial Times:

Zive says she feels fortunate to have started her business during the pandemic. She even created a podcast called Therapy is Cool. “My business lit something up inside of me I have never felt in my career. I felt stimulated, challenged and effective,” she said. Zive’s decision to start a business alongside her existing work is a classic example of a side hustle, a term that has made its way into pop culture.

The article highlights how Molly and others use the internet to turn the traditional 9-5 job on its ear:

Squarespace, which develops personal websites, paid Dolly Parton to rewrite the song “9 to 5” for a Super Bowl advert based on the phenomenon. “Working five to nine, you’ve got passion and a vision,” she sang. “It's hustling time, a whole new way to make a living.”

Molly is having lots of fun with her new business -- see her Instagram posts here, or go directly to the link in her bio here.

The full article is available online if you have a Financial Times account, or here if not (don't tell FT).

A family of hustlers, that's for sure. Go Molly!!!

I'm Liking Lenny

kellyclarksonshow.com

ABOUT THE SHOW

“The Kelly Clarkson Show” is the uplifting daytime destination for humor, heart and connection featuring Emmy®-winning talk show host, Grammy®-winning artist and America’s original idol, Kelly Clarkson. “The Kelly Clarkson Show” features the biggest names in film, television and music; as well as emerging new talent and community heroes.

The biggest name in dragon lizards, our family's own Chef Lenny, was interviewed yesterday by Kelly Clarkson during her segment What I'm Liking -- on YouTube here. Lenny and Valerie make a good team.

I like Valerie's telling of how it all began when "... with all of the extra time that we found we had on our hands ... we started posing him for National days." Could "we" also include middle-schoolers Penny and Carla? It seems ages ago when I first began seeing their weirdly-cute dragon lizard in bizarre kitchen scenes ... 2020 was indeed a long year!

But it's actually remarkable how quickly it all happened, Val. You kept at it, bizarre poses day after day. :) We're happy this clicked for you and your whole family. Stay healthy up there in the snow.

Kudos to Chef Lenny, employed by Valerie Musser, Michelle's granddaughter, Cindy's daughter, for garnering the attention of NPR for his/her cookbook Cooking for Humans. Click this link to read and listen to Steve Inskeep laud this duo in a short intro to NPR's "Morning Edition" last week.

I'm going to try his Chicken Pot Pie!

Your Choice Matters!

This is one of my favorite Bible verses.... simple and to the point!

                                             https://bibleversestogo.com/products/micah-6-8-walk-humbly-with-go

Good Morning!

One of the readings for our Bible study this week is: Exodus 17: 8-13. I loved this visual of support: In a battle between the warriors of Amalek and the Israelites, Moses stood at the top of the hill with the rod of God in his hand. "As long as Moses held up the rod in his hand, Israel was winning; but whenever he rested his arms at his side, the soldiers of Amalek were winning. Moses' arms finally became too tired to hold up the rod any longer; so Aaron and Hur rolled a stone for him to sit on, and they stood on each side holding up his hands until sunset."

A teacher friend of mine had lots of wise sayings! Whenever someone would get overwhelmed at work, Debbie would say to them:  "You can hold a glass of water for about 15-20 minutes, but you cannot hold it forever... eventually you have to choose to either put it down or ask someone else for help to take it for a while."

Our family support has been a huge blessing during this pandemic! It continues to be a daily choice to stay positive and supportive of one another, and our communities. Thanks for holding up my arms!

Lots to pray for right now: within our own families, our nation and and for the whole world!

Birthday Shout Out: November 2 πŸŽ‚

Today is Brian's birthday! I cannot believe that he is 37! Our birthdays are forever intertwined... Brian arrived a little earlier that his due date; I entered the hospital when I was 29 years old and came out as a 30 year old! Brian came over last night to celebrate with us! He continues to inspire us with his resiliency, sensitivity, kindness, and humor. Brian has made me a better person in so many ways, and still continues to teach me the gifts of love, humility, grace, patience, surrender, and always, always... hope! If you want to text him for his birthday... his number is: (949) 356-8435. He truly cherishes family!

Prayers Please!

Marty is having heart surgery today for a blocked carotid artery. As soon as we have an update from Monita, we will post it.

Annie  is recovering from another shoulder surgery that she had last week, and would appreciate prayers!

Praise Report

John and Marcie Bryant welcomed another grand-daughter last week; their son, Sean had another baby girl!

A huge shout-out to the brave firefighters that battled the Orange County Silverado Fire last week. It came within 2- 3 miles from our home... I spent the night at Nancy's last Monday (thank you Nancy and Fred for your gracious hospitality!)... it was too close for my comfort! But all is well here now!

Melda and I have been accepted into the Irvine Fine Arts Holiday Faire, being held this Saturday, November 7th at the Great Park in Irvine. We have had so much fun creating new things on her summer porch... we were quite a sight... 2 summer sisters playing with our sea glass! (sometimes 3, and even 4, as Michelle and Chris joined us from time to time).

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
